Veneers are thin facings of porcelain bonded to the front of your teeth. They change shape, colour, width and alignment without moving the teeth themselves, which is why they can do in a few visits what orthodontics takes months to do.

The question that actually matters is how much of your natural tooth has to be removed to fit them. Our answer is: as little as possible.

Minimal-prep veneers

Minimal-prep veneers, sometimes called no-prep veneers, are ultra-thin porcelain, often comparable to a contact lens in thickness, bonded directly over enamel that has barely been touched. Where reshaping is needed at all, it is measured in tenths of a millimetre and confined to the enamel surface.

Two practical consequences follow. Because there is no drilling into tooth structure, most minimal-prep cases need no anesthetic. And because your natural teeth stay intact underneath, there are usually no temporary veneers to wear while the porcelain is made.

There is a clinical reason to prefer it beyond comfort: porcelain bonds to enamel more strongly and more predictably than it bonds to the dentin underneath. Preserving enamel is not only conservative, it is what the bond depends on.

How this differs from traditional veneers

Traditional veneers remove a layer of enamel, sometimes reaching into the dentin beneath it. That tooth structure does not grow back, which means the tooth needs to stay covered by a restoration from then on. It is a permanent decision made at the first appointment.

Traditional preparation is still the right answer in some cases, and we will say so when it is. But it should be a considered choice, not the default.

Who minimal-prep veneers suit, and who they don’t

They work well for teeth that are smaller than you would like, worn down, short, or set with gaps, and for smiles that read as narrow. In all of those cases the porcelain is adding what is missing, which is exactly what a thin facing does well.

They are a poorer fit when teeth are already prominent, or significantly rotated and crowded. Adding porcelain on top of a tooth that already sits forward tends to look bulky. If that is your situation, we will tell you at the consultation rather than after the porcelain is made, and there are usually better routes, including aligners first.

Porcelain or composite?

Composite veneers are built up directly on the tooth in a single visit from a tooth-coloured resin. They cost less and can be repaired chairside. Porcelain is made in a laboratory, resists staining better, and holds its surface longer. Which one is right depends on what you are correcting, how long you want it to last, and what you want to spend: a conversation, not a rule.
